Title: Seong Mi-na & Hong Yun-seong
Artist: [personal profile] chacusha
Rating: G
Fandom: Soulcalibur (Soulcalibur III to be specific)
Characters/Pairings: Seong Mi-na/Hong Yun-seong
Content Notes: My submission for the makeover challenge. Drawn with Photoshop and Krita respectively. I recall the original being an extremely quick speed-draw (45 minutes). I took much more time on the redraw (~5 hours of work). My proportions and posing are obviously better now, but I kinda like Yun-seong's rather innocent expression in the original and being able to see more of Mi-na's outfit. Ah well.

Title: Shuos Khiaz
Fandom: Machineries of Empire
Artist: [personal profile] yhlee
Rating: G
Medium: ink
Characters: Heptarch Shuos Khiaz
Summary: Khiaz seated.
Content Notes: This is a redraw of an ink sketch from 2012. This time around, [personal profile] niqaeli agreed to model for me (so I would have reference for the foreshortening, which is very wonky in the original) in an approximation of the original pose, and I used the photo as a basis for the sketch and then the inks. IIRC, the original was inked using a fude nib fountain pen. This time I used a dip pen and Dr Ph Martin's colored India ink (Crimson) plus a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen for the black areas.

Title: Drawing of John Sheppard (on AO3)
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Artist: @mific
Rating: G (fairly SFW - only the top of his chest's visible)
Medium: traditional art
Characters: John Sheppard
Summary: John in profile, bare chested.
Content Notes: Another makeover of an old drawing from 2017 (when I started doing traditional art again). Materials for the redraw: graphite pencil, charcoal pencil for the hair, a little marker for shadows. The old drawing was coloured pencils but I made it grayscale for an easier comparison. The old drawing started off as a doodle, then I decided to make it into Sheppard but didn't use a reference pic so there's no likeness, just the usual "code for Sheppard" spiky hair and elf ears. For the redraw I used a reference pic and drew the likeness freehand (OMG so much erasing and redrawing). And I remembered how much I hate charcoal pencil - it smudges like crazy! Doing this made me think about how I used to believe I couldn't do likenesses - that they weren't "my thing". But after joining in here on @Drawesome and watching a bunch of Youtube art tutorial vids, I gradually found that if I used a reference pic and really focused on the details, I could in fact manage a likeness. Need to practice more regularly, though.

The pics are posted to AO3 as above, or click through below.

Title: Bucky Barnes Smiling
Artist: @mific
Rating: G
Fandom: Captain America (MCU)
Characters/Pairings: Bucky Barnes
Content Notes: Gouache painting (Payne's Grey and white). Okay, so a huge contrast here, because I felt kind of sorry for Bucky that my initial drawing was pretty crappy. I did that one in 2017 for my first Drawesome challege (a squiggle challenge), and you can't really compare them as I've used different mediums, being on a gouache kick right now, and I took a lot longer with this painting than the initial quick drawing. But, yeah, it's a makeover using the same reference, and since the old pic was the first thing I'd drawn in way too many years, it's nice to know that I've gotten better at likenesses over the past 3 years. Anyway, this was fun.

Marker B&W portrait Bucky Barnes looking to left and smiling.                Greyscale gouache portrait of Bucky with shoulder-length hair, looking to his right and smiling.

Hi everyone - we're starting off 2020 with a new challenge, the Makeover Challenge!

Banner with 2 Picasso faces - Makeover Challenge

Challenge #28 - Makeover Challenge
(thanks to Picasso for the banner pics)

For this challenge, you take an older artwork you created, and redo it, either to try something a little different, or because you think maybe you can improve a bit on your initial artwork. It can be a drawing or a painting, any medium is fine. You might have submitted it for an earlier @drawesome challenge, or it might not have been part of a challenge. It can be in a fandom or an original work.

Please feel free to use the comment section of this post for discussion of the prompt (ideas, suggestions, questions, etc). When you're done, post it to the comm according to the posting guidelines. Either post your earlier artwork as well, or link us to where it was initially posted.

A round-up post for submissions to this challenge will be done on 24th February.

Happy Drawing, everyone! :)
