Black and white drawing of Ray and Fraser, windswept, leaning back on a ship's rail, laughing.

Title: Scott from My Private Idaho (on AO3)
Artist[personal profile] mific
Fandom: My Own Private Idaho
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Scott Favor
Summary: Keanu Reeves as Scott, looking moody.
Notes: Drawn in pencil without erasing. I roughed out the portrait first with a light pencil, then used a softer, darker one for more contrast.

See AO3 post for description

Title: That was a stretch
Artist: [personal profile] yhlee
Rating: Teen (firearm pose, shirtless gentleman but no naughty bits)
Fandom: original work
Characters/Pairings: a guy with a gun
Content Notes: Fountain pen sketch from reference, wherein I learned that the Pelikan M1000 fountain pen is lovely to write with but terrible to sketch with (which is fine). I finished with a TWSBI Eco that was much better behaved for sketching. Doing this without any kind of undersketch was a little tricky but I suppose 5+ years of life sketch with a fountain pen has helped? I did draw a bounding polygon as a general guide for proportion landmark, plus a bit of gesture. I've got to review the surface muscles of the legs and forearm while I'm at it.

Drawesome Challenge 64: No Erase Challenge

Challenge 64: No Erase Challenge

Draw without erasing.

Create a drawing without erasing or using the 'Undo' button. Use decisive lines, without removing any marks made during the drawing process. Perhaps try using ink or other medium that cannot be erased.

A round-up post for submissions to this challenge will be done at the end of the month on Tuesday 30th April, 2024.

Happy Drawing, everyone! :)

Today's the last day of March, and we'd love to have you check in and chat with us. How have things been with you this past month?

Did you sign up for or take part in any fandom activities in March, or have you been working on any personal art projects? Are you currently trying to meet a deadline? Feel free to share upcoming art challenges that have got you excited, any frustrations you've been experiencing, possible goals for the next month, and so on. :)

Our Round-up of entries for Drawing Challenge #63: Let's Move will be posted tonight, and a new monthly art challenge will be issued this week. :)

Title: Gesture Drawing #2: Naatu
Artist: [personal profile] goss
Rating: G
Content Notes: This is my second entry for Challenge #63: Let's Move. Digital drawing of another performer from that night, this time one of the guys dancing. This was a sharper, stompier, less flowy dance. So my approach for this piece was to start with sketchy gesture lines, but then to focus more on lighting and the pull of the fabric to bring the feel of movement. :)

I've decided to download Nigthshade - the tool that will make any images I post into "poison" for AI datasets, out of spite basically. I'm not deluding myself that my art is interesting enough to be copied (that's where professional artists would use Glaze, another tool), but ever since Tumblr introduced the button to opt out of AI scraping (which was communicated in a deliberately vague post, my decision formed. I don't want to stop posting to Tumbr and I have no illusions that me pressing that opt-out button will protect me from being scraped. So I'm going to fight back with the tool that is available. The download is free from the University of Chicago's website (though it took some time) and I will have to resist posting from my mobile devices, but it's worth it.

So far it's looking like a simple 3-step process, upload the image, set the bar for the intensity of changes (I don't think there is a preview option yet, so I'll experiment), and then save the new version after it's been rendered.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Challenge #63: Let's MOVE!

There's been recent discussion in the comm about gesture drawing, figure drawing, and line of action. So I thought this month's challenge could be about drawing or painting movement. To make it as inclusive as possible, the theme is any type of movement - a person, animal, bird, or fish moving, an object, like a thrown ball or spear, or something abstract that conveys movement just by lines on the page - anything moving.

Here's a link to yhlee's post about gesture drawing

And to some resources about capturing movement:

A round-up post for submissions to this challenge will be done at the end of March.

I know that capturing motion and movement is something I find quite a challenge, so let's have a go at it together!

Have fun, and happy drawing, everyone! :)

Howdy! I'd posted this back at my DW and [personal profile] goss suggested I could share it here. I hope folks find it useful (or at least amusing).

I'm posting this not because I'm an expert (HA HA HA HA HA no) but because how to do a gesture drawing mystified me for years and I thought people might find a janky beginner guide of interest??

We're using this photo of a dancer from Pexels.

line of action = capturing the spirit/essence/motion of the pose cut for pics and length )

Hope this was useful, happy to answer questions if you're willing to wait as I'm often afk for health reasons.
