This is the fourth (and final) in our series of Diversity challenges. The goal of this particular challenge is to portray persons of diverse physical and mental abilities.

Drawesome Challenge 17 - Disability Diversity

Challenge #17: Disability Diversity

Create a drawing featuring a disabled person.

The comment section of this post may be used for discussion of the prompt (ie. ideas, suggestions, questions, etc.). For further clarification:

A disability is any condition of the body or mind (impairment) that makes it more difficult for the person with the condition to do certain activities (activity limitation) and interact with the world around them (participation restrictions).

There are many types of disabilities, such as those that affect a person’s:
  • Vision
  • Movement
  • Thinking
  • Remembering
  • Learning
  • Communicating
  • Hearing
  • Mental health
  • Social relationships

Although “people with disabilities” sometimes refers to a single population, this is actually a diverse group of people with a wide range of needs. Two people with the same type of disability can be affected in very different ways. Some disabilities may be hidden or not easy to see.

According to the World Health Organization, disability has three dimensions:
  1. Impairment in a person’s body structure or function, or mental functioning; examples of impairments include loss of a limb, loss of vision or memory loss.
  2. Activity limitation, such as difficulty seeing, hearing, walking, or problem solving.
  3. Participation restrictions in normal daily activities, such as working, engaging in social and recreational activities, and obtaining health care and preventive services.

A round-up post for submissions to this challenge will be done on Saturday 12th May, 2018.

Happy Drawing, everyone! :)

Ooh, I’ve got an idea already, that’s if people can stand anything MCU-related anymore! Not that the character was in IW at all, :).

These are all great suggestions. Since I‘m mentally retreating to Due South after having watched Infinity War, I thought maybe:

Diefenbaker (deaf) and Turnbull (I don‘t even know. I just read a meta which argued that he might have „mild form of dyscalculia,“ though his eccentric social interactions are much more prominent in my mind)

I‘m not doing them but maybe someone would like to draw Sheldon or Amy from BigBangTheory?

Okay I went browsing and via [community profile] access_fandom found this helpful article talking about four disabled X-Men characters and what not do in portraying their disabilty (the article focuses on the comics storylines etc but there are some hints that can be transferred to art as well)

Disability, Representation, and the X-Men
