Oh, don't let the "murder" part put you off! The Murderbot Diaries books are so great, and really very soft-centered and heartwarming even though there's a certain amount of action and danger. Martha Wells (LtLJ on AO3) has been a fan writer as much as a pro writer, and her work's very accessible for people in fandom.
