Non shiny shadows actually using graphite and not something else? Interesting. Might be worth a google.

It was a specific pencil, I think either carbon or charcoal...yes, it was, I put one on my Wish List on Amazon: Conté à Paris Charcoal B Sketching Pencil.

The Windsor & Newton Masterclass videos are you nice, I like them because they are short and simple.

"...hi-polymer 4B 0.5m mech lead....pushing it in, avoiding patterns. Very hard pressure blending after that to break the possible patterns.....especially on Arches (paper). On Fabriano there's a small amount of glare though."

Oh that's interesting about the polymer leads over normal graphite - and the tip about the paper too. I'm clearly going to have to do some more experimenting with my mechanical pencil!
