Fandom: Original Narrative Poem
Character: The narrator and the lady to whom the poem is addressed.
Notes:
teddywolf wrote one of my favorite poems, a narrative fairy tale. Every so often I redraw this illustration for it, and I was working on the latest when this wonderful challenge was announced.
The Old Kings Crown
Twas a rainy day when I was five when my father sat me down
Tho the lightning flashed and thunder boomed he told me not to frown
He said, "Boyo mine be not afraid, the thunder is but sound
And though the lightning's fearsome, aye, it's to the thunder bound
"But son of mine, be glad of rain for it helps both man and kine
And it holds a special magic when the sun does also shine
For if your heart is pure yet your treasure you've not found
You'll find it on the magic day you see the Old King's Crown."
Well when I had to my mansize grown I bade my father well
It was time for me to find a lass and travel for a spell
So I travelled over rivers and I travelled over land
And I travelled over oceans and over desert sand
I travelled through the villages and I travelled through the towns
And I travelled through the cities where young ladies may be found
Yet no woman did I ever meet wherever I did roam
That even once made me stop and think that this place was my home
Til one day I travelled to a town far away from where I'd been
It was farther from my father's house than I had ever seen
And lo! I watched the sun rise up while the rain was falling down
And in its midst I caught a glimpse of the magic Old King's Crown
The first band of the Old King's Crown was a band of brightest red
The next band it was yellow, like the gold in a riverbed
This yellow faded into green and then a band of blue
And the last band of the Old King's Crown was a band of violet hue
I left the town with the Old King's Crown as quickly as I might
But even though I left that town it stayed on in my sight
And as I ran the Fae came out and pointed and they stared
For the Old King's Crown came drifting down and rested in my hair
I've travelled now for many leagues and still the sun's not set
I've travelled years from Father's house but never will I fret
This journey that I'm on right now I know I'll never rue
For at the end of my travels with the Old King's Crown
That's where I will find you
That's where I will find you!
