Title: Inktober - Days 1-7

Content Notes: This year I decided to inspire my inktober from quotes and do illustrations mixed with handmade fonts... Some are in english, some in french and I decided not to have rules regarding the use of color.
What is great with this thematic approach is that it gives me a great range of styles to call on depending the quote...

It has been a long time since I didn't draw everyday, and finding my feelings again proved a bit challenging and frustrating at time, as my hand doesn't always do what my mind would want... And I know I'm kind of weak on the handmade-font front... Something to work on next week. ^^
But I'm also having a tremendous amount of fun and for now I'm experimenting with as many styles and diverses quotes as possible... Maybe I will repeat myself later on, but for now I'm trying to keep an open mind in the treatment of each quote.

Also: I have a google doc full of quote people gave me, that I draw from when it's time to break out the ink... but I don't have enough yet to last 31 days! So do not hesitate to give me more quotes, verses of a song or a poem, perfect lines in a book… Thank you! <3

I'm doing a series of Stargate Atlantis characters and their daemons, illustrating Daemonology by [personal profile] trinityofone  (a fusion with The Golden Compass). I'm taking a break today to rest my wrists, so time for a round-up. I liked the idea of this theme as I get to draw and paint a bunch of animals that I'd otherwise never attempt, not to mention trying to do likenesses for a number of Stargate characters I've never tried to draw before. So far I've learned:
- likenesses are generally easier in pencil sketches - ink is less forgiving,
- I need to practice my technique and watch some more 'how to' vids about cross-hatching and other shading, rather than just winging it instinctively - e.g. more incorporation of reflected light,
- I need to be careful with the detailing and shading as I have a tendency to overdo it and not to use negative space enough.

Anyway, they're all on my AO3 in a single chapterized work, here.

chapter links under the cut ) It's been hard work keeping up, but I'm definitely learning a lot about both drawing and inking.

These are so dreadful I nearly decided not to post at all. As it is I've just put up small versions so everyone can look away fast. I haven't drawn anything on paper in 20 years, but at least there is always a chance I can improve... if I ever find more than a few minutes to spare. I spent about 15 mins on the first using the prompt SWIFT - because I did it so fast. All rest were done in 2-3 minutes tops with minutes to spare before I had to go bed - or midnight! Oh, the irony!

Day 1: swift, Day 2: divided, Day 3: poison, Day 4: underwater, Day 5: long, Day 6: sword, Day 7: shy
