I did this challenge once and was NOT familiar with the fandom my author wrote for. Authors have to provide you with links to resources for the characters though (including screencaps), so there is definitely help to work for an unfamiliar fandom.

Well, in the end I signed up, as I reread the fandoms list and decided there were a small number I wouldn't mind doing art for. Still the same prob with not wanting to read the fic, but I can ask the writer to choose between a banner/cover which can be more symbolic and doesn't need much canon knowledge, versus an illustration in which case I'd get them to suggest a couple of extracts to illustrate. Then I could just read those bits.

Yes, the banner/cover would be a very good direction to go in especially if you're totally unfamiliar with the fandom.

If I recall correctly, those are mandatory to be provided for the artists while the fic is still being finished. So definitely no need to read everything.
