Post with info here.

I did this challenge once and was NOT familiar with the fandom my author wrote for. Authors have to provide you with links to resources for the characters though (including screencaps), so there is definitely help to work for an unfamiliar fandom.
I had a good time back then, so if you can fit it around your other commitments, consider signing up!

I'd like to help, but I'm reluctant as I know from experience that I won't want to read a 10,000 word fic in a fandom I don't know, which means trying to create art without much idea of what's in the story. A dilemma!

Yeah, I think this particular Bang is one where the artists are basically going in blind, without much "payoff" in a way. From my understanding, Big Bangs work best as collaborations between authors and artists, where each inspires the other.

So I think that maybe this particular kind of fandom challenge, where like 95% of the stories are in unfamiliar fandoms, there should probably be some kind of extra incentive for the artist to participate, otherwise it just feels one-sided to me.

Or maybe it should be marketed as more of a "GO IN BLIND" Artists Challenge. *g*

Well, in the end I signed up, as I reread the fandoms list and decided there were a small number I wouldn't mind doing art for. Still the same prob with not wanting to read the fic, but I can ask the writer to choose between a banner/cover which can be more symbolic and doesn't need much canon knowledge, versus an illustration in which case I'd get them to suggest a couple of extracts to illustrate. Then I could just read those bits.

Yes, the banner/cover would be a very good direction to go in especially if you're totally unfamiliar with the fandom.

I'd get them to suggest a couple of extracts to illustrate

Yes, I've always found that this works really well for me.

Go you for signing up, and good luck with the challenge! :)
