Here's our first drawing challenge for the new year! Hope you all have fun with it. :) Many thanks to mekare for the prompt.

Challenge 41 - Automatic Drawing

Draw without intent.

The Automatic Drawing challenge involves creating a drawing without thinking. It is letting the mind rest while the hand moves. "It's starting with nothing, no source material, no message, no ideas--a blank mind--and then unleashing the hand, watching in surprise and amazement at what happens." This seems like one of those warm-up drawing exercises that's more about drawing for drawing sake, where it's all about the process rather than the end result.

This challenge is very appealing to me, to switch things up from fanart challenges and other projects where I tend to focus a lot of my energy on (and inevitably stress out about) achieving a clear, preconceived visual.

I'm looking forward to attempt switching off my brain and just enjoy filling a blank surface, and see what emerges. :D

Heh, yeah, totally. I think the article even mentioned doodling while on the phone as an example of "Automatism". *g*

Oh that is a great choice for the first challenge of the year, especially after all the exchanges and challenges in December and November.

This is the sort of thing I would do in my school notebook margins during class. One of the big reasons I loved the flowy ink pens so it could bleed on the lined paper. I'll try and give this challenge a shot!

Heh, yeah, it's like using mindless doodling as a springboard for a more elaborate artwork.
