Dottie was a huge supporter of civil rights - she left all her money to Martin Luther King, who left it to the NAACP. So she and Hughes may possibly have met, at some sort of literary soiree, and swapped ideas for poems. Although Langston Hughes was so much more of a romantic than cynical Dorothy...
