Drawesome Monthly Check-In Post

(Hello everyone. I'm still abroad, so communication is sporadic at the moment. Apologies for that.)

July ended earlier this week, and the summer is flying by. We'd love to have you check in and chat with us. How have things been with you this past month?

Did you sign up for or take part in any fandom activities in July, or have you been working on any personal art projects? Are you currently trying to meet a deadline? Feel free to share upcoming challenges that have got you excited, any frustrations you've been experiencing, possible goals for the next month, and so on.

Are you considering taking part in our current community challenge? You can share your thoughts and ideas here.

I would also like to especially welcome our new members to the [community profile] drawesome community! Feel free to drop by and say Hi in the comments if you wish. :)

I've done a few things since our last check in but I'm off to Berlin on Sunday so won't be around much to do extra stuff, sadly. I'm currently working on designs for two sculpture trails next year (elephants this time!), and I've got a few fandom challenges to do too. One quicky_bang, two pieces to do for the spn_reversebang, art for spn_cinema and 2 x wincestbigbang art fills. So busy enough, I reckon!

I've a few things done but not uploaded, and a few things in process. I've started using DeviantArt to have my drawings all together.

IronStrange - Stephen can't do casual

IronStrange - I will likely redraw this later.

And another IronStrange thing in progress.

I like the Ironstrange pieces! A cloak would be great for a merman, all swirly underwater!

Thanks! I've been drawing Stephen cape-less underwater because it might drag and I picture the cape on the shore just being all 'nope'. Someone else on the IronStrange discord has been drawing him where the cape becomes his tail in a cool way.

I got heavily into Hakuoki and caught up on Steven Universe, so have drawn some fanart for both of those. But I think I'm proudest of this picture of Shuu from Hatoful Boyfriend.

Also I signed up for [community profile] remixrevival, and am planning on hopefully starting my assignment for that today. "Madness" is open if anyone's interested in creating fanart based on other people fic and art.

I signed on for Remix Revival as well, had a blowout there last year doing pinch hits but I'm too overloaded this year so will just stick to my assigned remix. :) I like that pic of Shuu - quite creepy.

I've had two pretty overloaded months - didn't even manage to do a check-in comment last month. Combination of RL work and too many writing and art challenges - so that part's all my own fault!
The rest of the CapRBB art I was doing got posted in June (and the fic I wrote for it - Wolfteeth, a rock band AU). So that was:
Art for 'Grapes and Grenadine' by marcellabianca
Art for 'Coming Home' by soo.
Then I did a portrait of Parker from Leverage I'm pretty happy with - one of those ones that just worked, with the likeness.
In July I made 3 framed Warrior Women portraits for Tielan in a craft exchange - Wonderwoman, Teyla Emmagan and Valkyrie,
and a recent portrait of Michael Burnham from Star Trek: Discovery, trying out some 'high chroma' QoR watercolours.
Meanwhile, I painted a whump piece for the SGA Reversebang (not revealed yet) and have been working away at my due South Big Bang art/fic project and illustrations for 2 writers in the WIP Big Bang. Some of it's due Monday, so it'll be a busy weekend!

The first one has such bold lines it kinda reminds me of woodblock prints? I know it's not, but makes me curious if you've tried that before. And I like how Shuri and Parker came out, too. :)

I tried woodblock printing once years ago in high school. I guess the technique has a similarish end result, with inking, then that pic scanned and turned into “lineart” and coloured digitally. Kind of like a multilayer woodblock. :)

Your lineart does indeed remind me at times of woodblocks or linoleum printing! You realy have a very distinctive art style and your stylized pieces always have a strong personality!

I've done a couple fan works this month as gifts for friends. I also managed to get a couple more longer former landscapes done. I'd really like to get back to do regular pencil and paper sketches in my sketchbook, and hopefully after I finish this summer obligation I'll be able to do that for some of my break.

Sure!! This is the portrait I'm most proud of--my take on Taako from the Adventure Zone, for a really dumb throwaway joke that was made in an episode I recently listened to http://fel-as-in-tumbld.tumblr.com/post/176463512626/a-very-taako-ohara-i-started-listening-to-the

And this is the landscape I'm most pleased with https://fel-as-in-arts.tumblr.com/post/176281682191/fel-as-in-arts-run-photo-this-is-from-july-17th

Another case of WDTMG? (where did the Month go?)

- I finished Jaws of the railsea https://www.deviantart.com/jainas/art/Jaws-of-the-Railsea-Les-dents-de-la-Merfer-754807953

- I did a bit of silk screen printing but had troubles again. I think my screen was probably poorly done form the start. the too close drawings hinder clean printing. Also the paint dried a bit in the screen before I could clean it and I'm afraid it's a bit ruined... the hot weather made me postmone any other try as I think the paint would'nt fast at all. I need to by a karsher to clean the screen. https://www.instagram.com/p/BlQT5I3BIsN/?taken-by=artofclem

- I finished my Ravage piece. Not the on I was envisioning at first, but a cool result nonetheless. It's still under wrap, but sneak-peeks here : https://jainas-art.tumblr.com/post/175909077107/sneak-peek-of-my-first-illustration-idea-for-the and here (colored version) https://jainas-art.tumblr.com/post/176453960432/second-and-last-sneak-peek-of-my-illustration

- I did some speed drawing from prompts with friends on a discord and as Iam going through a Hunter X Hunter revival, that's what came out:
- Creature (Gon + dragon) https://jainas-art.tumblr.com/post/176418819937/the-hunt-20-min-speed-drawing-for-the-prompt
- Renaissance (Hisoka, spoiler for t34) https://jainas-art.tumblr.com/post/176420896967/reborn-15-min-speed-drawing-for-the-prompt

And that's it for the month!

In August I'm signed up as an artist for the Murder Husbands Big Bang, my first big bang ever, I'll try to do a second piece for Ravage (maybe), and I wouldn't mind more speed drawing, it realy get the juices flowing!

I really love the finished Railsea piece, amazing perspective and very scary!
Screen printing sounds hard! The Ravage drawing is great, all masks and secrets, and with the colour, wow!

I had no troubles printing during classes, but now I am on my own it is so much more difficult. So many things can go wrong, from incorrect paint-thining (either too much or not enought diluting chemical), to improper angle, speed, pressure (and so on) of the squeegee (is that the right word? idek) while printing!
I really need to clean my current screen, prep an easier one and practice more.

Thank you for the comments!

I have done... almost nothing, July was kind of a terrible month ahah. New job, travel, had to deal with house and car damage insurance nonsense, so the only art I've done is some progress on the commission piece. Hoping to finish it up maybe tomorrow? What I kinda wanted to do after I finish it is focus on painting studies (maybe like daily or at least weekly portraits or something) to try to get faster and more efficient at rendering form, so hopefully I'll have time to do thing in August.

Hi ya'll,
I've never posted here before, but I'm looking around and this seems like as good a thread as any to drop a comment.
For me, the summer is not flying by at all! If I had it my way I'd be hibernating in an air-conditioned coffin until October, with all the RL problems I'm having magically solved. I'm basically just trudging along with the Japanese-language Yu Yu Hakusho fandom on twitter and doodling the characters being cute, or sorting them into Hogwarts houses (http://darlingdeathbird.tumblr.com/tagged/my-art)... I have a penpal who doesn't speak any English at all, and she's really into stationary and nice pencils and stuff, so it's rubbing off on me. For a couple years, I've done almost exclusively digital painting, but I'm rediscovering the joys of traditional art and little cartoons and stuff. There's something soft and cozy about it. In a few weeks, I will hopefully open up art commissions and get to do more stuff like this for clients. (And god, I hope it cools down by then.)
♥, Jenny
