I absolutely love Uhura! Celia Rose Gooding's performance of "Keep Us Connected" (on YouTube), my favourite song from the musical episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, directly inspired this piece. <333

ETA: I watched your time lapse just now and have a question: what‘s the purpose of the first layer? You sketched her face, turned it transparent and then sketched it again? I‘m so clueless about digital art.

I sketch the first layer to get the broader proportions right, which is my weak point when it comes to portraits. And then I do the second layer separately so that I can zone into and concentrate on the details and play around with shading, which is the part I enjoy more.

I have them in two layers because if I end up changing my mind while trying to capture a particular expression (which I often do!), the underlayer still has the original proportions and "energy" of the initial lines, and gives me a quick starting point to work from.

Yeah, it's a fun take on Star Trek. It's got a lot of warmth and nostalgia, plus I enjoy the diversity and sort of oddball humour. :)
