With glass, I get the best results when I work closely with a reference pic and reduce it to patches of colour in my mind's eye. It looks like absolutely nothing while I'm drawing it, but by the time I'm done putting all the patches in their correct place, visually when you pull back, the brain magically reads it as glass texture.
