I came across this the other day:

Jiaoren June - a multifandom, multiship event

So jiāorén (jiāo=shark, rén=human) are water creatures from Chinese folklore. The Twitter post above links and explains some of this lore to inspire people to create more mer-creature art.

There is a tiny bit of info in this merfolk wikipedia article, too.
