Art Rec Challenge

There's still a lot going on in the world, so here's a low-pressure challenge that's about what you've been looking at and enjoying over the past few months, rather than a drawing challenge.

What's this challenge about?

Either in a separate post or in the comments here, give us some recs or resources you've explored and tell us why you enjoyed them. Things like favorite artists on Youtube or elsewhere who've inspired you, or who post interesting challenges or tutorials, sites with resources for drawing or painting, sites or posts with technical info, inspiration or art ideas. Add a link to any site or post you're recommending.

Ideally, link to sites or posts that are freely available and don't require registration or a fee. e.g. Instagram won't work for people unless they have an account, and Skillshare's great but you have to register and pay, so those two aren't as suitable. But if you really want to recc a paid site, let us know the usual fee and why you think it's useful and good value.

This challenge will run through to mid February.

Happy reccing, everyone! :)

I like ergojosh's channel on YouTube; he's sponsored by some iPad screen protector company so he does mention them about twice per video, but he does reviews of digital art hardware and tutorials for digital painting, mostly focusing on Procreate or Clip Studio. (Some of the content generalizes, like the figure drawing stuff.) Videos are free to watch.

- Drawabox is a very good (and inconventional) resource for getting down the fundamentals of drawing;
- i'm really enjoying Cafe Watercolor on youtube for watercolor lessons and demos (he's best at landscapes, but he has a very good view of colors, etc overall).
- Marco Bucci's channel is also very good at delivering conceptual lessons on painting overall (and he does breathtaking digital art demonstrations)
- Figuary month at LoveLifeDrawing (and corresponding modelling sessions at Croquis Cafe) is indispensable in learning gesture drawing live.
- Grahame Booth on youtube also does very lovely watercolor lessons and demos (such nice trees!)
- and i think everybody knows that, but SenshiStock has thousands of poses - action and otherwise - for reference.

Random amalgamation of things I've watched or used recently:

  • Sarah Burns Studio on Youtube has a lot of follow-along gouache and watercolor tutorials about painting landscapes which I have been... struggling to figure out ahah.
  • Audra Auclair just started posting on Youtube again and I really love her art and her videos are nice to listen to. She talks some about her struggles with anxiety and other health issues sometimes. Though cw for mild body horror and nudity in her work?
  • Nadiaxel has some tutorials that I feel like are pretty well put together. I especially liked her recent one talking about art style exercises and also like, what art style actually is.
  • Recently found this site that has references both nude and clothed specifically oriented to help you design characters (or just if you need help with action poses or particular clothing or something): characterdesigns.com
  • Drawfee's Patreon videos get posted up later for free and a lot of them are "Draw Class" videos on some topics like drawing faces or animals and one on animation which was interesting for me, I made a really rudimentary animation attempt after watching it. The "how to practice effectively" one was also interesting.
