Drawesome Monthly Check-In Post

Tomorrow's the last day of November, and we'd love to have you check in and chat with us. How have things been with you this past month?

Did you sign up for or take part in any fandom activities in November, or have you been working on any personal art projects? Are you currently trying to meet a deadline? Feel free to share upcoming challenges that have got you excited, any frustrations you've been experiencing, possible goals for the next month, and so on. :)

You did so much for October! I was so impressed.

I did a still life for the first time and learned so much from the exercise!

...and then my iPad Pro, which I use for digital art, stopped charging. T_T I can't tell whether the charger died, the port died, the battery died, or something else entirely. I've ordered a new charger and I hope that fixes the issue, but we'll see. I really don't want to have to buy a new iPad. This is doubly frustrating because I was hoping to do some holiday art for people, and while I do still have my watercolors, things like "jewel tones" are harder to pull off with the techniques I know. :/

I am still planning to finish a couple of October drawings, though as usual struggling to draw while dizzy. :/ Unexpectedly, I did draw this bit of mpreg Bucky Barnes nonsense for a flash exchange, which was quite fun. :)

My art is slowly coming back. I drew 2 pix for challenges, one involving a foursome (that was complicated and fun to draw)!

I am still working steadily on Procreate stuff, but I am stalled out on a lot of projects. this is one I've been planning for a while and ... I may need to restart from scratch just to make the images feel more like they go together.

I am also fussing a lot with my isometric room stuff, trying to get the compositions better. The main tricks people use to make the rooms pop or give them life works if you are just creating a random cute room, but this is a fan art project and I want all the details to make sense.

Still re-inking a lot of old stuff. I did this for a Fandom Stocking back when it was still running. I digitally inked it and made some tweaks and this is the newer version. Should likely redo it from scratch, but it was a good exercise in trying to see and correct the problems with a drawing.

FandomTrees is running in place of FandomStockings this year. I'll miss FandomStockings, but I hope Trees goes well and that I can find some fills I can do.

Also trying to figure out where I can post my stuff. I am putting my rooms on Art Station and seeing how that goes.

I had an artistically productive November! :D

I designed a seasonal card with a robin, and had it printed. (Drawesome members who want to receive this card from me: just tell me! I have enough prints and I'm happy to send them out!)

I drew and sent cards for the [community profile] drawesome holiday card exchange. (Two aren't finished yet but I'm working on them!!!)

And I received a super-cute tiny watercolor sketchbook (a generous gift from [personal profile] yhlee; thank you!!!) and started making it a picture book involving my own characters. So far, it's only sketches, but there will be watercolor! :D

I did... absolutely no art I think, sans a tiny sketch in my sketchbook. Well I put together some maps for games but they were less art and more functional? Wish I could've done the card exchange, but my brain was not up to it this year hah.

I let my enthusiasm rule (again) and signed up for so many things that all seemed to collide in November (that was mainly due to also trying to do Drawtober). Fortunately, everything worked out though it was stressful for a while there.

I started November still doing some Drawtober prompts:

#24 Rock Miss Fisher, G

I mention working on #25 in the post but that was abandoned due to the challenges.

[community profile] poi_fanworks Person of Interest Big Bang

Art for Kingfishers by Branwyn

I hardly do anything for the fandom during the year, but the big bang seems to draw me back every autumn. Great collaboration, met a wonderful new writer for the fandom this way. She is also an artist and did art pieces for the Bang as well as writing her fic. Wow.

[community profile] nifexchange

Herbs Nirvana in Fire, G

This was as lovely as last year and I was so happy someone prompted my favourite female character! As always so many fantastic prompts that made me wish I had had time for treats.

[community profile] ds_c6d_bigbang

The Dreaming Road Due South, G

It has become a tradition to do this bang every year and I was lucky to claim a wonderful fic. This was an exercise in speed. I had read the fic way back at the beginning of October but the muses were uncooperative. After Drawtober and the other Bang and exchange were over, suddenly a fully formed composition formed in my head. After that it was only difficult to find the time to put it down (and research the poses, and a 60s dancing dress for the OC).

Looking back I just stuck with line drawings in ink after Drawtober (with the exception of POI) because it felt most comfortable. The partial colouring in the last piece was a bit of an experiment but I think it worked to make the characters pop into the foreground.

Phew, this was longer than I expected.

I was so happy to see all your lovely pieces in October! I need a break right now but will start on the cards next week probably. Yours and [personal profile] mific’s are going to be New Year‘s cards. :-)

ETA: I am still dithering over the sundial exchange. I half signed up two weeks ago and then retreated. I have nothing lined up in January but am not sure if I want to commit. Maybe I can sign up as a pinch hitter....

Argh I hate tech trouble like this. My iPad‘s battery is just slowly going crazy (showing 40% and then crashing after five minutes). Hope you get your issue fixed!

What was the still life? Did you post it in your journal?

Yeah, me too. I have ideas for some of the leftover prompts but right now I‘m trying to take a break.
Your Bucky was fun!

OMG, foursome? Definitely complicated. My three-person-dance was already a headache to figure out.

I’m trying to get back into producing artwork on a regular basis after hand surgery. I’ve made it somewhat of a goal for 2021, so I’m easing myself in with the last month of this year.

I didn’t sign up for my fandom activities, but I’ve been painting two personal pieces that are Christmas presents for my husband. I’ve been working on them slowly to be gentle on my hand.

A quieter month in Nov with mostly at-home projects like seasonal cards - the overseas and card-exchange ones are all posted now, just have the NZ ones to do. I'm using drawings done for an earlier [community profile] drawesome challenge, surrounded by zentangle patterns. Now I've done the designs and drawing, it's a matter of colouring in the zentangles on each card with acrylic inks - a relaxed task with an audiobook playing. I usually fit in 3 a day.
Also did 6 illustrations for my fic-and-art entry to the due South Big Bang - Wolfbrothers - continues my liking of grayscale pics with pops of colour. I want to get back to intermittent BIPOC portraits - they got derailed in October - and have some Old Guard art to do soon, plus a Venom artwork for the Marvel Trumps Hate auction, and another dS work for the secret Santa.

Oh noes with the iPad. Damn technology!
I guess the more transparent watercolours, unmixed, would work better for jewel tones.

It's here - I posted it locked in my journal (now unlocked) because it was my first attempt at a still life (I did it on my iPad - God knows I've never achieved blacks that deep with a real pencil!) and I was embarrassed by it. :3

I'm just waiting for my new charger to arrive so I can see if that fixes the issue, thanks!

Inorite??

I'm just nervous about using watercolors straight from the tube when I don't have experience with that technique-wise! But I suppose eventually I should give it a try.
