Admin Post: Community Check-In for November 2020
Nov. 30th, 2020 11:32 am
Did you sign up for or take part in any fandom activities in November, or have you been working on any personal art projects? Are you currently trying to meet a deadline? Feel free to share upcoming challenges that have got you excited, any frustrations you've been experiencing, possible goals for the next month, and so on. :)

Date: 2020-11-30 07:27 pm (UTC)...and then my iPad Pro, which I use for digital art, stopped charging. T_T I can't tell whether the charger died, the port died, the battery died, or something else entirely. I've ordered a new charger and I hope that fixes the issue, but we'll see. I really don't want to have to buy a new iPad. This is doubly frustrating because I was hoping to do some holiday art for people, and while I do still have my watercolors, things like "jewel tones" are harder to pull off with the techniques I know. :/

Date: 2020-11-30 11:19 pm (UTC)I am also fussing a lot with my isometric room stuff, trying to get the compositions better. The main tricks people use to make the rooms pop or give them life works if you are just creating a random cute room, but this is a fan art project and I want all the details to make sense.
Still re-inking a lot of old stuff. I did this for a Fandom Stocking back when it was still running. I digitally inked it and made some tweaks and this is the newer version. Should likely redo it from scratch, but it was a good exercise in trying to see and correct the problems with a drawing.
FandomTrees is running in place of FandomStockings this year. I'll miss FandomStockings, but I hope Trees goes well and that I can find some fills I can do.
Also trying to figure out where I can post my stuff. I am putting my rooms on Art Station and seeing how that goes.

Date: 2020-11-30 11:37 pm (UTC)I designed a seasonal card with a robin, and had it printed. (Drawesome members who want to receive this card from me: just tell me! I have enough prints and I'm happy to send them out!)
I drew and sent cards for the

Date: 2020-12-01 06:22 am (UTC)I did... absolutely no art I think, sans a tiny sketch in my sketchbook. Well I put together some maps for games but they were less art and more functional? Wish I could've done the card exchange, but my brain was not up to it this year hah.

Date: 2020-12-01 10:12 am (UTC)I started November still doing some Drawtober prompts:
#24 Rock Miss Fisher, G
I mention working on #25 in the post but that was abandoned due to the challenges.
Art for Kingfishers by Branwyn
I hardly do anything for the fandom during the year, but the big bang seems to draw me back every autumn. Great collaboration, met a wonderful new writer for the fandom this way. She is also an artist and did art pieces for the Bang as well as writing her fic. Wow.
Herbs Nirvana in Fire, G
This was as lovely as last year and I was so happy someone prompted my favourite female character! As always so many fantastic prompts that made me wish I had had time for treats.
The Dreaming Road Due South, G
It has become a tradition to do this bang every year and I was lucky to claim a wonderful fic. This was an exercise in speed. I had read the fic way back at the beginning of October but the muses were uncooperative. After Drawtober and the other Bang and exchange were over, suddenly a fully formed composition formed in my head. After that it was only difficult to find the time to put it down (and research the poses, and a 60s dancing dress for the OC).
Looking back I just stuck with line drawings in ink after Drawtober (with the exception of POI) because it felt most comfortable. The partial colouring in the last piece was a bit of an experiment but I think it worked to make the characters pop into the foreground.
Phew, this was longer than I expected.

Date: 2020-12-01 10:15 am (UTC)ETA: I am still dithering over the sundial exchange. I half signed up two weeks ago and then retreated. I have nothing lined up in January but am not sure if I want to commit. Maybe I can sign up as a pinch hitter....

Date: 2020-12-01 04:00 pm (UTC)I didn’t sign up for my fandom activities, but I’ve been painting two personal pieces that are Christmas presents for my husband. I’ve been working on them slowly to be gentle on my hand.

Date: 2020-12-01 05:22 pm (UTC)Also did 6 illustrations for my fic-and-art entry to the due South Big Bang - Wolfbrothers - continues my liking of grayscale pics with pops of colour. I want to get back to intermittent BIPOC portraits - they got derailed in October - and have some Old Guard art to do soon, plus a Venom artwork for the Marvel Trumps Hate auction, and another dS work for the secret Santa.

Date: 2020-12-01 05:27 pm (UTC)I guess the more transparent watercolours, unmixed, would work better for jewel tones.

Date: 2020-12-01 09:42 pm (UTC)I'm just nervous about using watercolors straight from the tube when I don't have experience with that technique-wise! But I suppose eventually I should give it a try.
